FIXING SOCIAL SECURITY IS NO LONGER
ON THE BACK BURNER

by

Dee Taylor
(July 2003)

I just received an up-date from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in Washington, D.C. that I felt impelled to share with you. This is what it said in a nutshell. For a short while, it seemed like the Administration may have placed its idea of "fixing" Social Security on the back burner. But now, a bipartisan group is quietly leading the charge for partial privatization of Social Security and is "pushing" for action this year on recommendations proposed by the President's Commission.

The three options detailed in the President's Commission's 141-page recommendation would ultimately reduce Social Security benefits and/or put pressure on workers to retire at a later age. Each recommended plan would significantly reduce retirement benefits. Each would cut retirement income for most workers. Each would sharply cut survivor and disability benefits. Finally, each plan lacks important details on how the proposed private accounts programs would actually operate!

"Much of the renewed push for partial privatization is going on behind the scenes," said Barbara Kennelly, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. She continued, "But we know for a fact there is pressure on the President to make Social Security "reform" a top priority, right alongside Medicare."

There is much work to be done on Social Security recipient's behalf. The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare is one of America's largest senior organizations. They will be ready with a convincing case for seniors on Social Security and Medicare and will take a strong stand against each of these harmful proposals. Timing is critical. You, and others, may want to help this powerful organization block those who would weaken Social Security and Medicare.

Your elected representatives need to hear from you on this subject today to let them know how you feel about these proposed plans! If we all stand together with one voice and tell our opinions to our representatives in Washington, then we can make an impact. Social Security and Medicare may no longer be on the back burner, but we seniors aren't asleep in the kitchen. There are literally millions of aging Americans who can make them sit up and pay attention. They need to hear from us now! So, I encourage you to call or e-mail your representatives in Washington today!

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare provided this information. It is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization comprised solely of concerned Americans - like you - who have invested a small amount to help block those who would weaken Social Security and Medicare. You can learn more about them and how they are fighting the good fight in Washington, D.C. by going online to www.ncpssm.org.
