September 2002 Edition PRIME TIME PRODUCTION’S YOUR VOICE OF CHOICE AS YOU AGE Featuring "Sizzlin´ Seniors" Television and Hi everybody: Well, it has been a busy third quarter and I have much to share with you. So, take a few minutes to read through our newsletter for this quarter and then let us hear from you either on our website comments section on www.sizzlinsen.org or e-mail us at: sizzlinsen@aol.com. ************************************************************************** "Your Prime Time" with Dee Taylor RADIO Off and Running ************************************************************************** Finally in August 2002, we met with KAAM 770AM radio in Irving, Texas to talk with them about doing a radio program for those seniors who cannot get cable or perhaps cannot afford it. At KAAM's request, I wrote a show and we did our promo for them to see if we had the "right stuff" to do a radio talk show. Our promo was met with great enthusiasm, and they encouraged me to begin looking for my advertisers for the show. We had much preparation to complete, a contract, promo tapes, a brochure and a Media Kit to be completed for sharing with folks on our marketing calls. With all that completed, we were ready to begin our marketing calls in September, and we are thrilled to report we have our first contract for advertising on radio. We are moving forward in October to reach more advertisers, and we plan to be on air in November 2002 with at least 12 advertisers. So, if you are reading this and want a way to connect to the senior market, well we finally have something for you, and we are reasonably priced too. E-mail us at: sizzlinsen@aol.com. or call me at 972-618-2623 if you would like to sponsor our radio program. We are very excited about this opportunity to reach more aging Americans with our radio broadcast in a cross-media effort with our television broadcast. Just think, we could be impacting at least 2 million lives North to Oklahoma; South to Austin; East to Abilene; West to Tyler and of course the whole Dallas metroplex through radio and television. Of course, we are in print too. So, look for our next newsletter and our progress as we continue to develop our radio programming. We have named our radio broadcast "Your Prime Time" with Dee Taylor. I will write, produce and host the show, just as I do "Sizzlin' Seniors" television broadcasting. To make cross-media effective, we will have a "Sizzlin' Senior" on our radio broadcast, someone who can be an example to others to continue to live their lives to the fullest as they age. We are planning to broadcast on each Saturday of the month. If you or anyone you know would be interested in talking with me about the opportunity to advertise with "Your Prime Time" radio, just give me a call at 972-618-2623 -- or e-mail us at: sizzlinsen@aol.com. -- and we will be happy to sit down with you. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at our terms for radio advertising. ************************************************************************** ABOUT KAAM 770AM RADIO ************************************************************************** KAAM 770AM has been on air in the Southwest for about 5 years playing 15 Legends songs every hour. They broadcast as far North as Oklahoma, South to Austin, East to Abilene and West to Tyler, Texas. Their current hosts are: Jaan McCoy, Linda Martin, Deacon Evans, Cary Richards, Tori Logan, "Hubcap" Carter. Some of the many legends they play may include, Bennett, Cole, Streisand, and Sinatra. On Saturday, they have talk show hosts that will bring subjects to benefit their listeners from the ages of 45- 67. We will be one of those hosting our senior show, so, you won't want to miss our new show on Saturdays. (Start time and date will be announced later.) We will be doing some PR to make sure you are aware of the first show as we reach for our goals with 12 advertisers and of being on air in November 2002. ************************************************************************** LISTEN UP/ NURSING HOME REPORT ************************************************************************** A ninety-year-old woman was bitten 60 times by fire ants in the Clairmont Tyler Nursing Center in Tyler, Texas. According to the Associated Press Report, the bedridden woman who suffered the bites was moved to a different facility following her discharge from a hospital in late August. This was a real life experience that could have been prevented. According to the AP, "The victim's roommate had a history of hoarding food and throwing it on the floor of the room, increasing the risk of attracting ants. State Officials are recommending that the facility pay $1,500 a day in fines for failing to protect the victim from the ants." Preventable? Definitely. By whom? The attendants who changed the sheets daily. The nurses who gave the daily meds, but also family and friends of both of the women who were residing in that room. So, listen up… here is a tip from Care Giver E-Mail. When you visit your loved one, look around and not just at the food on the trays for content and pleasing appearance, but the whole living area. Check the cleanliness. See how food items are being stored. Most seniors have a box of cookies, candy, chips, something that family members have taken them. Ensure before leaving the room that any food items you delivered is in a secure container that the senior can open, but also keeps little critters out. Better to be safe then sorry. ************************************************************************** ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE RESEARCH UP-DATE ************************************************************************** I just received a report that the Alzheimer's cure is going to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in this century. While ADR is currently sponsoring 23 major investigations into this mind-destroying disease, one of the most important breakthroughs has been Dr. Stanley Prusiner's Nobel Prize-winning discovery of a new class of disease-causing agents called prions. The study of prions may unlock the final mysteries of the process of Alzheimer's. If you'd like a copy of the report, e-mail us at: sizzlinsen@aol.com. What is holding this final research up is money. On our website, www.sizzlinsen.org, we have a fundraiser that will benefit this disease called "Making Memories Live." You can help fund the research for this disease by ordering this product on line. Just look for the "Products" icon and click to find out all about it. So, if you have a loved one with this disease or know someone that does, don't leave our website without ordering…. then you too can say you did something to help this research and wipe out this horrible disease. ************************************************************************** UPDATE ON SENIOR FARES ************************************************************************** If you have been reading our past newsletters, you know that several airlines have discontinued the senior fares. Namely, American, Delta, Northwest and US Airways all dropped their senior airfares in July 2002. However, both Delta and US Airways said that they would continue to offer some form of discounted rates for seniors, although those rates may be subject to such stipulations as advance purchase and two night stays. They also mentioned that the special offers might not always be the lowest prices available. Are senior discounts everywhere disappearing? The Wall Street Journal reported that the senior discount might be a thing of the past. With the Baby Boomers turning 55+ now, there are soon going to be 78 million aging Americans over 60. So, vanishing discounts for seniors may be here to stay. One last word, Southwest Airlines has a senior discount that can save you money on your next vacation. Their special senior fares vary by market, but the highest is $129 one way with 25-65% off most fares. The fare is completely refundable and does not require advance payment. Check it out for yourself. ************************************************************************** DID YOU WASH YOUR HANDS TODAY? ********************************************************************** Here's why I ask……. Hand washing has a dramatic effect on one's susceptibility to illness according to a study done by Ryerson University, Toronto. In their study, people who washed their hands more than seven times a day were four times less likely to become ill than those who washed less often. Now, that is something to think about, isn't it? Did you think to wash your hands today? ************************************************************************** MY ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS THIS QUARTER **************************************************************************
In August, I contacted KAAM to talk with them about radio broadcasting again. I met with Alliance Insurance regarding a spot on one of our programs talking about Long Term Care. I also met with the Vice President of Emeritus Corporation about advertising for our radio broadcast. I met with a writer for television and films who counsels me. I did a promo broadcast for the producers of KAAM to establish my ability to write and produce radio scripts. I met with another company in Irving for the possibility of radio advertising. I did two television shows for August. One on the controversial Hormones for ladies, which we did an off-site shot for and the other one was AARP's Tri-Umph in October. I taught two bible classes at Cottonwood Retirement Home. September started with the interruption of my own schedule as I was called to Jury duty. Then my husband arrived home after being away for four months. I attended a Texas Ranger ball game on senior day. I attended a senior meeting with the Winner's Circle from the Plano Senior Center. Met with new sales manager for KAAM to lay down my marketing plan starting in September. We filmed live off-site at the Texas State Fair, Big Tex turned 50 and AARP presented him with his AARP card we all get in the mail at 50. Doesn't matter to AARP what you may be made of, you are going to get your card when you turn 50. ************************************************************************** POLITICS OUT OF WASHINGTON, DC ************************************************************************** As reported in a News Release from the NCPSSM (National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare) in Washington, D. C. they have sent a letter to the US Senate in October from President, Barbara Kennelly stating their support for the three provisions in the Senate Bill S.2533 (similar to H.R. 4069). (The Benefits Enhancements for Women's Act) This Bill would improve benefits for widows of early retirees who die before reaching the normal retirement age by repealing the current provision that subjects the widow's benefit to the early retirement penalty. This Bill would also repeal the 7 year period of eligibility for disabled widows who are at least 50 but not yet 60. Under a current law a widow must be at least 60 years old to collect widows benefits. However, if she is at least 50 she can collect benefits as a disabled widow provided that she became disabled within 7 years of her spouse's death. Finally H.R. 4069 / S.2533 would eliminate the requirement that a divorcee must have been in place for two years for the divorced spouse who is at least 62 to collect full spousal benefits, whether or not the working spouse is collecting benefits or is affected by the earnings limit. Ms. Kennelly stated, "Over 100,000 women will benefit from these three important improvements. We hope this is the beginning steps in an effort to rectify benefit inequities affecting all women." Both bills have been bottled up in committees since May 2002. ************************************************************************** PRESIDENT'S REPORT ON PRIVATE SS ACCOUNTS NCPSSM, Washington, D.C. ************************************************************************** Ms. Kennelly, President and CEO of NCPSSM on October 3rd stated, "The American public will not accept the benefit cuts or the increased financial risks that privatization demands." Her comments were based on the recommendations put forth by the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. Testifying before the Senate Finance Committee, Ms, Kennelly said, "In the end, I believe that the true value of the commission's report is that it exposed privatization's fundamental failings. The American public is ahead of policy makers on private accounts. How telling it is that pollsters are advising PRO-PRIVATIZATION CANDIDATES TO AVOID USING THE TERM "PRIVATIZATION. They can distance themselves from term but they will not succeed in changing the debate. I believe the issue is not dead but merely in hibernation and will be revived after the mid-term elections." The concerns the NCPSSM have with the commission's recommendations are:
************************************************************************** THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON YOU, BILL BAILEY ************************************************************************** No, he isn't the Bill Bailey that we sing about. But he is the Bill Bailey that was with KRLD for 26 years and is now with KAAM, lucky for us. Bill is the gentleman who will be making marketing calls with me in the Dallas metroplex to help bring advertisers on board for our new radio broadcast, "Your Prime Time" with Dee Taylor in November. We are so blessed to have his enthusiasm about our programming and as a willing participate in selling our advertisers. I always say, "You can't beat experience," and Bill Bailey has it in radio sales. Thanks Bill for all you are doing to help seniors get more timely information through our new radio show. ************************************************************************** We will see you next time; don't forget to go to our Products page on www. sizzlinsen.org and help with the Alzheimer's Research by ordering our "Making Memories Live" albums. With hard work and a lot of luck, we will be reporting next time that we are on air broadcasting our radio program for aging adults. Keep us in your prayers, so that our advertisers will join hands with us to accomplish this tremendous task. Together, we can make a difference, even if it is in just one person's life. Dee Taylor
