Your Voice of Choice As You Age

HEALTH TIP FOR TODAY

Onions are the vegetable of the day according to Swiss researchers. Lots of factors affect our bones, such as age, medical conditions, and the use of prescription drugs. It is now thought the onion could bolster our bones because of a compound (a chemical called GPCS) in white onions reduced bone breakage and less bone loss in testing of rats! Bones normally thin with age. It generally appears in women after menopause and in men after 65. If you are small boned and have a family history of Osteoporosis, then you may be at risk. I have long thought onions were God’s medicine; I use them in all my diet, you may want to add them to your diet too!

 Social Security Battle Goes On

Both, AARP and Nat’l Committee to Preserve SS and Medicare are asking their membership around the country to keep strong opinions about private investment account going, don’t stop bombarding your Senator’s office in Washington, D.C. “ Make no mistake”, said Barbara Kelly of the NCPSSM, “the threat of privatization continues to swell and the big money supporters continues to grow.”  Those of you who have called or written your congresspersons need to know that you are making a noticeable impact on Capitol Hill. You are succeeding in getting their attention at a most critical point in the battle. AARP found in a March poll, that 79% of their membership, when learning more about the private investment accounts, opposed the idea of diverting up to $1,300 of their SS taxes into a private account. The facts are: Creating private accounts would drain funds from SS, cut guaranteed benefits, and pass the bill to future generations. Let your voice be heard today!

Medicare Premiums Rising

Health Care Costs are rising according to the Medicare Rights Center. The latest is Medicare Part B premiums are likely to rise to $89.20 a month in 2006. And get this; the premium increase in 2006 WON’T include the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, which is expected to be about another $37 per month! “We are seeing more and more of our SS checks go to Medicare premiums. Record premium increases are driving out-of-pocket health care costs through the roof,” stated President, Robert Hayes of the Medicare Rights Center.
