PUPPY PICKS A GRANDMA

By Dee Taylor

With much glee the little boy ran to the phone, telling his grandma the baby puppies are due to be born!

In a very short time, there was a knock at grandma's door. With his arms extended wide, holding on tight with all his might, stood the smiling boy with an irristable bundle of joy, both wiggling with delight.

As he thrust forth the new tiny puppy of black, white and gray for grandma to see right away, grandma sensed that God had dressed him in fur that special way, for delivery by the little boy that very day.

Then the happy little boy said, "Here grandma, I saved this one just for you - you see, cause this little fella wants a home full of love, just like the one you gave me."

As the little boy tried to sit the puppy down, he fell scampering to the ground and ran through Grandma's door with a bound. He was wagging his little tail so sweet, as if searching to see if this grandma would give him a treat.

Instead, what grandma got was a wet puddle on the floor-
Just an obvious reminder of what was in store.
A scolding was coming, that was for sure as grandma all alarmed and much more, hurriedly scooped up the ball of fur putting him out the kitchen door!

Using all his charm the boy spoke respectfully, and assured grandma the puppy would do no further harm.
As the puppy clamored to get back in the door, the little boy waited to see if grandma could handle more.

Then as if by command, grandma let open the door wide,
Up jumped the puppy into her tired old arms and quickly began rooting his way into the wrinkles under her short neck. He was wrangling at his best, while his tiny feet were dangling over her breast.

Quickly his funny little face with his black, cold nose, snuggled down into the nest of grandma's hair the color of snow. While, his drooling tongue was licking her ear bare,
the message was clear, puppy was testing grandma's ability to love without care.

Each time grandma sat him down, he would run round and round, until his own little legs caused him to stumble and fall upon the ground. Grandma laughed as they played chase, with not much style, and very little grace.

Then the little boy sighed happily and began to sing.
"Puppy picks you, picks you grandma, please let him stay, he doesn't want to be left alone all day with no one to play."

As Grandma held the puppy tight, his clear, black eyes looked into her own that night, and she begin to ponder that he had been sent by angels to fill her own life with God's love and light.

Her heart swelled and though he was so small, she knew
He needed a good home with someone who would feed him, give him a bone and lots of love above all!

Grandma couldn't resist, and as mist filled her eyes,
Holding tight to her prize, she winked at the boy as she turned and darted in the kitchen door. The little boy was left with no doubt, grandma could love this puppy, and much, much more.

The puppy contented to find a home, out of her eyesight, the puppy was peering over grandma's shoulder, radiating a smile mirrored by the angels at his birthright.

All at once, as the puppy peered out from under grandma's collar, was the face of the little boy who held a big grin. He seemed to say, it is time to celebrate- you have a new home tonight, so let's howl again and again, "PUPPY PICKED A GRANDMA… TONIGHT!"
