MAKING STRIDES AGAINST ELDER ABUSE

By Dee Taylor

Looking for something for the whole family to do on a Saturday in August? Well, get your walking shoes on and come on out to help raise the awareness of elder abuse! This is the second year for the "Making Strides for Elder Abuse" event, which brings attention about the abuse, neglect or exploitation of the elderly in Dallas, Texas communities. Hopefully, it will also inform the elderly and others about where they can turn to for assistance if they need it.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes in our homes today. Sometimes I drive by the beautiful homes in our communities and think, "Oh what a beautiful home but how the people live in it!" Elder abuse is more common in the home then we may think, and it shows up in other places too. It is estimated that one of every 25 elderly persons in the United States suffers some form of abuse, neglect or exploitation; most often by someone they know.

In 2004, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services confirmed more than 44,000 cases of Texas seniors being abused, neglected or exploited. As a senior myself, those are scary statistics. We all need to do something to stop this terrible crime and you can- by being a part of the Elder Abuse's second annual event, Making Strides Against Elder Abuse Walk and Exercise Jamboree on Saturday, August 27, 2005 at the North Park Center from 7-9am (inside the North Park Center.) Rain or shine, I promise, you won't get wet or hot! Registration will begin at 7am and the walk and exercise at 8am.

I will be emceeing the event and giving away many donated door prizes. Dynamite entertainment and exercise specialties (Tia Chi and Yoga) will be offered as we all stretch together and share donated food and drinks. Come on out and get in on a very special door prize drawing donated by Southwest Airlines with two round trip tickets anywhere Southwest flies; with no restrictions/no blackouts and good through September 1, 2006.

You could be the lucky one, but not if you don't participate.

The drawing for the airline tickets alone ought to make it worth your time. Bring your whole family, get up early and come on out in your sneakers to serve a good cause. You can help them understand that life is caring about others, especially the very vulnerable, like children and the elderly. Believe me, all is not well for everyone in our society today.

All proceeds from the walk will benefit the Silver Star Room and Elder Abuse Awareness in Dallas, Texas. It is your opportunity to bring one or more item for the Silver Star Room and be entered in the drawings. The Silver Star Room is located at the Texas Department of Family Protective Services for use by social workers to assist elderly victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation. Suggested donations include: soap, canned goods, shampoo, personal items, toothbrushes and even adult diapers are needed.

Dollar donations are accepted too.

If you should know of anyone experiencing elder abuse, call the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-252-5400. We hope to see you and your families at the Making Strides Against Elder Abuse event, August 27th, at North Park Center, walk and exercise beginning at 8am sharp!
